Tribute to the Tribeswomen (article first published : 2005-11-14)
Internationally acclaimed local artist Elga Rabe is presenting an exhibition of 22 hitherto unseen oils titled Tribute to the Tribeswomen of Africa at Art on the Square, Umhlanga.

Having spent almost an entire year fervently painting behind closed doors, Elga Rabe's impassioned interpretation and Tribute to the Tribeswomen of Africa has been described as possibly her “most outstanding contribution of African art to date".

Having earned the reputation as one of KwaZulu-Natal's most prominent artists, Elga Rabe won respect and recognition for her work around the globe. Yet the soft spoken mother of four, wife and nature-lover is humbled with the knowledge that some of her most ambitious pieces grace the walls of homes and art galleries from London to New York.

Having spent her youth growing up on a farm in Mpumalanga, Elga Rabe developed a deep love and fascination for Africa's wildlife and the cultural wealth and beauty of the people of Africa. She has fast become recognised as an icon in African art with her ultra realistic wildlife scenes and emotional portrayals of tribal life.

Craig Mark, owner of The Mark Galleries of which Art on the Square is a part, comments "Rabe is a phenomenal artist. Not only does she capture the essence and diversity of Africa, she is somehow able to bring her paintings to life. A rare talent. A unique vision. Magnificent work."

Elga Rabe has taken part in numerous exhibitions, both locally and internationally. These include The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Antiquarius Gallery in Soho New York, New York Art Expo, The Philadelphia International Black Arts Festival, The Cardiff/ South African Trade and Décor Show, The Nedcor Building at the World Summit amongst numerous others. Collectors include The City Hall of Cardiff, The Premier of KZN, S'bu Ndebele, The Vice President of ABSA, JP Morgan, Malcolm Horton, African American actor Chris Tucker and many more.

A Tribute to the Women of Africa is a theme which Elga Rabe plans to expand further to include all the women of Africa. This first collection is focused specifically on the tribeswomen of Africa for whom she is particularly passionate: "The tribeswomen of Africa have such a presence, a pride and a love for life that captivates me as an artist. This exhibition is a tribute to their warmth, their joy, their motherhood, their beauty and above all their womanliness."
